Three Things That Help Me Sleep

One of my goals this week was to get in bed earlier and make sure I’m awake at a decent hour. This isn’t the only change I’ve made recently in an attempt to improve my sleep, though. In the past six months I’ve tried many strategies, and here’s what I’ve found to be the most helpful:

  1. Planning my tomorrow. The last thing I do every night before turning off the lights is write out my to-do list for the next day. Sometimes I’ll journal too if I’ve got a lot on my mind. This helps quiet my brain so I’m not up all night with racing thoughts.
  2. Diffusing calming essential oils. Bergamot and lavender are my favorite, but I’m planning to purchase a blend soon that is specifically for nighttime diffusing.
  3. Guided meditation for sleep (yoga nidra). This is my favorite album – it really helps me relax. Sometimes I’ll listen to the podcast Sleep With Me, in which the host tells boring stories in order to lull you to sleep. Check either of those out if you struggle to quiet your mind at the end of the day.

  1. A while back, my counsellor gave me a great cd that has a 20 minute track that guides you through Progressive Muscular Relaxation. The speaker directs you to tense up and then relax five areas of your body and I’m usually asleep after the second one!! The other night, I was asleep after the first 😀 Occasionally when I’m really not tired I’ll put the whole cd on (three other shorter tracks) rather than just playing the one track on my ipod.
    I’m trying to improve my sleep habits too, so I might try some of your tips.

  2. The idea of you listening to boring stories makes me laugh! It makes sense, though. My brother and I used to listen to audio books to get to sleep, specifically the Focus on the Family “Chronicles of Narnia” series. They were great to listen to, and gradually go to sleep. My brother would sometimes go to sleep earlier than me, and I would come in with him asleep and turn it off! It’s good to have a few methods, cos not all of them work all the time.
