One of my goals this week was to get in bed earlier and make sure I’m awake at a decent hour. This isn’t the only change I’ve made recently in an attempt to improve my sleep, though. In the past six months I’ve tried many strategies, and here’s what I’ve found to be the most helpful:
- Planning my tomorrow. The last thing I do every night before turning off the lights is write out my to-do list for the next day. Sometimes I’ll journal too if I’ve got a lot on my mind. This helps quiet my brain so I’m not up all night with racing thoughts.
- Diffusing calming essential oils. Bergamot and lavender are my favorite, but I’m planning to purchase a blend soon that is specifically for nighttime diffusing.
- Guided meditation for sleep (yoga nidra). This is my favorite album – it really helps me relax. Sometimes I’ll listen to the podcast Sleep With Me, in which the host tells boring stories in order to lull you to sleep. Check either of those out if you struggle to quiet your mind at the end of the day.
